The Adriatic had lots of pirates (and I do not refer to the tourists traps around this area ;-) Imagine how the Italian and Spanish boats were bringing richest earnings from their owner's business far away, if it was gold or spices or arms - on the Adriatic Sea. And here were these pirates who were raiding boats and entrenching oneself in strongly armed cities with artillery. Visit the fortresses of Kotor and Ulcinje and you are back in these times. Or Žabljak Crnojevića which was built to defend the Osmans.
